HONORS 201: STRENGTH FINDERS ASSESSMENT

As part of the Honors 201 course, we had the opportunity to take the strength finders assessment to see what our leadership strengths are. To do this, I read the StrengthFinders book and took the assessment once completing the book. I found that my top five areas were Learner, Discipline, Achiever, Responsibility, and Significance. After seeing my results, I discussed them with my Honors 201 class. Doing this, we were able to see how we are all different leaders, discussed how we could be successful in future leadership roles, and how we could play off of each other’s leadership strengths in a team setting.

Learning about my personal leadership values, I was able to think about how I could apply them in a leadership position in the future. Looking at my five areas, I think that they fit my personality and style perfectly. I believe that I use my achiever strength very often to help myself and others in a group succeed. I think that when I use this strength, it pushes everyone in my group to do the best that they possibly can so we as a group can put our best foot forward. I think that I am always willing to learn more about how to be a leader, and just learn more about any topic or setting with which I am working. Generally, I see the learner strength fitting in my personality and leadership style well. I think that I also use responsibility a lot when I am in and out of a leadership role. I see myself always thinking of the tasks that I need to do in order to make the group successful and how I can get my task done and help with others as needed. If I am unable to do my task, I always am trying to find a better way to make up for them rather than just saying I am sorry that I did not get the task done. Significance as a leadership strength is one that I was shocked to see on my report. I think that I always knew that I liked to be seen as significant in other people’s eyes, but I do not think that I ever saw it as a leadership strength of mine, just something that I value personally. I think that it is great that I want to be seen as significant in other member’s eyes because then I think that it makes me more conscience of putting my best foot forward as a leader and not just doing the bare minimum. All of these areas are important for me to use and acknowledge when I am using them so I can build upon my leadership philosophy and become the best leader that I can. I think that this is so important on the career path that I want to go on in the future. This is because I want to run my own research team. In order to do this, I am going to need to be a strong leader and someone that the rest of my team can trust to complete the research task at hand.

I plan to grow in my five strength areas over the next few years in any leadership position that I take on. I plan to challenge myself in leadership growth by trying to work on the cores of leadership that are not in my main five. I would like to do this so that I can be the most well-rounded leader that I can be. I think the biggest weakness that I currently have is actually in one of my five strengths, significance. Although it is important for you to think about how you are seen in the eyes of others, I do not think that it can be everything. I think that sometimes I think too much on how people think of me. I just cannot put as much weight on this aspect as I currently do. The campus groups that I plan to apply my five values to are the Maverick ‘Machine’ Athletic Band and the Hockey Cheer team. If I were selected for leadership roles in these groups, it would be a great chance for me to help the groups grow to be better and stronger than they were since I arrived on campus.
